A Preview of the 2024 PGA Championship

As the lush greens of Valhalla Golf Club prepare to welcome the world’s top golfers, Tee Time Tavern invites you to join us in experiencing one of golf’s grandest tournaments: the PGA Championship. Known for its demanding course and prestigious history, this year’s championship at Valhalla is set to be a spectacle of skill, strategy, and suspense. Here’s what you need to know as we gear up for this thrilling event.

A Formidable Venue

Valhalla Golf Club, with its sprawling 7,609 yards and a par of 71, stands as the third longest course played on the PGA tour this year. The course demands a blend of power and precision, challenging players to master its lengthy fairways and tight greens. Notably, the greens at Valhalla are among the smallest on tour, averaging just 5,000 square feet, requiring impeccable accuracy with each approach shot.

Historical Significance and Recent Renovations

Since hosting its last PGA Championship in 2014, won by Rory McIlroy, Valhalla has undergone significant renovations. The fairways and tees have transitioned from bentgrass to Zeon zoysia, making for a firmer, faster play. Length has been added to several holes, notably the 1st and 14th, enhancing the challenge for this year’s competitors. These changes promise to bring a fresh dynamism to the historic challenges of Valhalla.

Key Challenges and Stats

  • Driving Accuracy: Essential due to Valhalla’s punitive long rough and the narrower fairways, especially with the forecasted wet conditions leading up to the tournament.
  • Par 5 Scoring: Success here will be critical; notably, holes like the 18th provide the best opportunity for birdies or better, offering a thrilling finish.
  • Long Iron Play: With roughly 50% of approach shots coming from beyond 175 yards, precision with long irons will be crucial for setting up birdie chances and saving par.

Weather Outlook

The weather will undoubtedly play a role, with varying conditions predicted over the four days. It looks like we will have potentially wet conditions on Thursday, rain is expected Friday, with the weekend expected to be mostly clear but could still be wet. Ball striking will be paramount!

Our Pick for the PGA Championship

Bryson Dechambeau Winner (22.5/1)

Ball striking is going to be key. Distance is going to be required. Lift clean and place benefits Bryson perhaps even more than most. Valhalla isn’t going to require great creativity, it’s going to be about ball striking consistently. Bryson is playing phenomenal golf right now, he played great at the Masters, he is entering his prime years as a golfer, and I think he could be about to go on a run starting with a PGA Championship victory. Another bet we like for Bryson is to top 10 at +260! He came in 4th last year at the PGA Championship, he came in 6th at the Masters, I expect another top 10 this week and hopefully a win!

Closing Thoughts

As the PGA Championship unfolds at Valhalla, each round promises to be a test of skill and mental toughness. From seasoned champions to rising stars, the field is packed with talent, all vying for the coveted Wanamaker Trophy. Whether you’re watching from the lush fairways of Valhalla or at home on TV, this championship is set to be a memorable clash of the best in golf. Let’s be sure to enjoy one of the 4-5 best weeks of golf all year!
